326: The Number That Waited 24 Years for Company

Pakistan's chase of 326 in the Lahore tri-series final matched a record that had stood alone since Sourav Ganguly's India hunted the same target at Lord's in 2002. Some numbers are just built different.

Some records fall every season. Bats get bigger, boundaries get shorter, and the record books have learned to use pencil. And then there are numbers like 326, which sat untouched for 24 years and finally found company on Saturday night in Lahore.

When Pakistan reached 331 for 7 to beat Sri Lanka in the tri-series final, they completed a chase of 326, the joint-highest successful chase in an ODI final. The word joint is doing heavy lifting, because the other half of this record is one of the most retold nights in cricket history: the 2002 NatWest Series final at Lord's, where India chased 326 against England, won with three balls to spare, and Sourav Ganguly celebrated by waving his shirt from the balcony like a man who had been waiting his whole career for the excuse.

The parallels are eerie. In 2002, India were carried by two young men, Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif, whose 121-run stand rescued a chase that had collapsed early. In 2026, Pakistan were 14 for 2 and rescued by a senior pro's hundred, Fakhar Zaman's 127, and then a young finisher, Arafat Minhas, whose 61 from 31 balls did the late damage. Different eras, same script: early collapse, one great innings, one fearless kid, a trophy.

What makes the record remarkable is the context it survived. The years between 2002 and 2026 rewrote ODI batting entirely. Scores of 350 became routine, 400 was breached in World Cups, and chases that would have been folklore in 2002 became Tuesday. Yet in finals, specifically, nobody hunted down more than 326. Pressure is the last pitch condition technology cannot flatten. Finals shrink even great batting sides, and 24 years of them could not produce a bigger chase than two, a generation apart, on two famous grounds.

Records shared are not records diminished. Lahore 2026 now sits next to Lord's 2002 in the book, and the number 326 has a second story to tell.
