For nine overs in Sylhet, West Indies looked like a side that had picked the wrong end of a coin toss. Roston Chase won it and chose to bat on a pitch with early life in it, and by the time the ninth over was done his team was 27 for 3, with Bangladesh's new ball pair of Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud running through the top order. By stumps, the same day belonged entirely to Amir Jangoo. His unbeaten 111 off 171 balls, with 11 fours and two sixes, carried West Indies to 235 for 4 in 70 overs, and turned a morning of panic into a platform.

The collapse had a shape to it. Brandon King went early, Joshua Da Silva was trapped lbw by Taskin for 12, and Kavem Hodge followed, leaving the tourists three down before the shine had even come off the ball. West Indies were already short-handed before a ball was bowled, with John Campbell and Tagenarine Chanderpaul ruled out by fever, which forced Da Silva into the side and handed a debut to Kevin Wickham. A debutant walking in at 27 for 3 usually ends quickly. Wickham answered it with 61 off 145 balls, and the pair added 131 for the fourth wicket, the stand that changed the day.

Jangoo's innings was a study in picking the right moments. He defended when Taskin and Hasan were finding movement, then attacked when the ball softened and the spinners came on. His second Test century arrived in his seventh Test, brought up off 149 balls with a six off left-arm spinner Taijul Islam, a shot that said more about his state of mind than any statistic could. At tea West Indies were 180 for 4, with Jangoo on 76 and Wickham already gone, caught in Hasan's second spell. The evening session belonged to Jangoo and Justin Greaves, who finished unbeaten on 35, their unbroken stand worth 77 from 119 balls when bad light called stumps early.

There is a larger story running underneath the scorecard. Jangoo arrived in Bangladesh on the back of a strong limited-overs tour of India, and he has carried that form into the longest format without changing his method. He plays the ball late, he punishes width, and he trusts his defense enough to leave the good balls alone. On a day when the pitch did plenty in the first hour and little after it, that judgment was the difference between a respectable total and a rout. West Indies lead this two-match series 1-0, and a first-innings total past 300 would leave Bangladesh chasing the game from the second day onward.

Bangladesh will look back at the first hour and wonder how they let it slip. Taskin finished with 2 for 61 and Hasan with 2 for 58, figures that flatter neither man given how much pressure they created at the start. The new ball did its job, the catching was there when it mattered, and then the bowlers had no answer once Jangoo settled. Bangladesh's spinners, usually the controlling force at home, went wicketless through the middle of the day while Jangoo picked them off.

For West Indies, the day was proof that this side has more resilience than its recent reputation suggests. A team missing two senior openers to illness, three wickets down before lunch was a thought, and a debutant at the crease should have folded. Instead, Jangoo played the innings of his young Test career and Wickham announced himself with a half-century on debut. Day two starts with Jangoo eyeing 150 and Chase and the lower order still to come. Bangladesh need early wickets in the morning, because if Jangoo bats another session, this Test will start slipping away from them.
