In the challenging arena of international cricket, especially against a powerhouse like Australia Women, a maiden century is not just a personal milestone; it’s a statement. Bangladesh’s Sobhana Mostary etched her name into the record books and the hearts of cricket fans with a magnificent maiden ODI century in the second match against Australia Women in Brisbane. Her innings wasn’t just about the runs; it was a masterclass in composure, technique, and a testament to a particular batting strength she proudly acknowledges: her prowess with shots square off the wicket.

Mostary’s century arrived at a crucial juncture, illuminating a path for Bangladesh Women’s cricket on the global stage. It wasn’t merely a score; it was a beacon of what dedicated talent can achieve against the very best, turning heads and sparking conversations about the rising tide of skill within her team.

Mostary’s Masterclass: A Maiden Century Against the Odds

The Gabba in Brisbane, a fortress for Australian cricket, witnessed a truly special performance from Sobhana Mostary. Facing the formidable Australian bowling attack, known for its pace, precision, and relentless pressure, Mostary played an innings of remarkable character and skill. Her hundred wasn’t handed to her; it was painstakingly earned, carved out through careful shot selection, excellent running between the wickets, and the ability to find boundaries when opportunities arose.

Australia Women, a team boasting a rich history of dominance and a lineup brimming with world-class talent, rarely concede individual batting triumphs with such grace. Mostary’s innings, therefore, speaks volumes about her mental fortitude and technical acumen. She navigated through testing spells, absorbed pressure, and kept the scoreboard ticking, culminating in a memorable three-figure score that will be cherished for years to come. The context of the series, with Bangladesh facing one of the sport’s juggernauts, only amplified the significance of her achievement, showcasing not just individual brilliance but also the growing competitive spirit of the Bangladeshi squad.

The Square Shot: A Weapon Forged in Practice

Post-match, in a candid reflection that resonated with cricketing purists, Sobhana Mostary attributed a significant part of her success to a specific area of her game: "My shots square off the wicket have always been good." This seemingly simple statement offers a profound insight into her batting philosophy and technique. Hitting square off the wicket – covering shots like the cut, the pull, the square drive, and the glance – requires a unique blend of excellent hand-eye coordination, precise timing, and a strong base.

For Mostary, this isn’t just a casual observation; it’s a testament to countless hours spent honing these specific skills. Against a pace attack that often aims to exploit weaknesses outside the off-stump or with short-pitched deliveries, having reliable square-of-the-wicket shots can be a game-changer. These shots allow a batter to turn defensive situations into scoring opportunities, releasing pressure and keeping the fielders on their toes. A well-executed cut shot dissects the off-side field, while a perfectly timed pull shot sends the ball scorching to the mid-wicket or square leg boundary. The ability to play these shots with confidence not only adds runs but also frustrates bowlers, forcing them to alter their lines and lengths.

On the true, bouncy pitches of Australia, where the ball comes onto the bat at a good pace, batters who are adept at playing off the back foot and capitalizing on width or short deliveries tend to thrive. Mostary’s confession underlines her understanding of these conditions and her preparedness to exploit them. Her century wasn’t built on slogging; it was a construction of classical cricket strokes, where her trusted square shots played a pivotal role in maintaining momentum and accumulating runs.
